How to change DNS records at DreamHost
Long-running independent host and registrar.
Where the DNS settings live
- Sign in to the DreamHost panel.
- Go to Websites → Manage Websites, or Domains → Manage Domains.
- Click DNS next to the domain.
Adding a record
- Scroll to Add Record to yourdomain.
- Enter the Name (leave blank for the root), pick the Type, enter the Value.
- Click Add Record Now!.
Editing or deleting a record
- DreamHost does not edit records in place — delete the old record and add a replacement.
- Custom records have a Delete link; DreamHost-generated ones do not.
Changing the nameservers
- Under Manage Domains, click the registration link for the domain.
- Choose DNS and enter custom nameservers.
DreamHost nameservers
These are the values you would set at your registrar to let DreamHost run your DNS. Always confirm them in your own account — several providers assign per-account values.

Gotchas at DreamHost
- Auto-generated records (marked as such) cannot be deleted while the domain is hosted on DreamHost. Change the hosting setting instead.
- DNS changes at DreamHost can take up to 6 hours to publish — longer than most.
After you save
DNS changes are not instant. Resolvers keep the old answer until the previous record's TTL expires, so a record with a 4-hour TTL can take 4 hours to change everywhere — occasionally longer if an ISP ignores TTLs. Check what the world currently sees before assuming something is broken, and see the troubleshooting page if it still looks wrong after the TTL has passed.
