How to change DNS records at Namecheap

Popular budget registrar. Their free DNS is called BasicDNS.

Where the DNS settings live

  1. Sign in and go to Domain List in the left sidebar.
  2. Click Manage next to the domain.
  3. Open the Advanced DNS tab.

Adding a record

  1. Under Host Records, click Add New Record.
  2. Choose the record type from the dropdown.
  3. Set Host to @ for the root domain or the subdomain label (e.g. www).
  4. Put the destination in Value.
  5. Leave TTL on Automatic unless you need a specific value.
  6. Click the green tick at the end of the row to save.

Editing or deleting a record

  1. Click directly on the field you want to change — the rows are inline-editable.
  2. Click the green tick to save, or the red cross to cancel.
  3. The bin icon on the right of the row deletes it.

Changing the nameservers

  1. Go to the Domain tab (not Advanced DNS).
  2. In the Nameservers section choose Custom DNS.
  3. Enter the nameservers and click the green tick.
  4. Switching back to Namecheap BasicDNS restores the Advanced DNS tab.

Namecheap nameservers

These are the values you would set at your registrar to let Namecheap run your DNS. Always confirm them in your own account — several providers assign per-account values.

  • dns1.registrar-servers.com
  • dns2.registrar-servers.com

Gotchas at Namecheap

  • The Advanced DNS tab only works while the domain is on BasicDNS/PremiumDNS. On custom nameservers the records there are ignored.
  • Namecheap adds a default CNAME www → parkingpage.namecheap.com and a URL redirect record. Delete both before going live.
  • Their "URL Redirect Record" type is a frame/redirect, not real DNS.

After you save

DNS changes are not instant. Resolvers keep the old answer until the previous record's TTL expires, so a record with a 4-hour TTL can take 4 hours to change everywhere — occasionally longer if an ISP ignores TTLs. Check what the world currently sees before assuming something is broken, and see the troubleshooting page if it still looks wrong after the TTL has passed.
